Mining Plasma Table Questions, Answered

Yes. AR400 and AR500 cut on a CNC plasma table much like mild steel of the same thickness — abrasion-resistant plate is hard, not heat-proof. Plasma is the industry-standard process for wear plate because it delivers clean, square-edge parts at a fraction of laser or waterjet cost.

That depends on the plasma source. The Arc Max Unlimited pairs with the Hypertherm MAXPRO200 for production thick-plate cutting, and the Arc Max X HD runs the Hypertherm XPR170 or XPR300 for the heaviest work. Most mining wear parts — 3/8-inch to 1-inch AR plate — sit comfortably in range.

For wear parts, plasma wins on economics. Fabrication services report plasma cutting AR plate at roughly a quarter the cost of laser and a tenth the cost of waterjet — and thick abrasion-resistant plate is exactly where lasers slow down. Laser earns its premium on thin, tight-tolerance work, not chute liners.

Plasma leaves a narrow heat-affected zone at the cut edge, typically a few millimeters, where hardness drops off. For chute liners, skid plates, and screen plates, that thin edge band wears in without affecting service life. If a spec requires full hardness to the very edge, allow for finish machining.
